November is National Epilepsy Awareness month

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) - Almost three million adults and nearly half a million children in the United States live with epilepsy.

It's an underdiagnosed issue that can affect anyone at any age and lead to lifelong issues.

The brain disorder causes recurring, unprovoked seizures. Local doctors say there are several different types of treatments now available to help someone with epilepsy.

Neurologist Dr. Fariba Farhidvash of The Neuron Clinic in Palm Springs says, "Our main treatments are medications. Now we have over 20 medications that we can offer patients to help control epilepsy. But that's not the only option that we have."

News Channel 3's Peter Daut spoke with Dr. Farhidvash to discuss the symptoms and treatment for the disorder.

Doctors say if you see someone having a seizure, stay with them and move them away from anything that could be harmful, like sharp objects.
