DESERT HOT SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) - A woman was charged with animal cruelty after allegedly abandoning a puppy in a Desert Hot Springs neighborhood last week, police announced.

The Desert Hot Springs Police Department shared video of the incident on its social media pages. The video shows a vehicle stop, leave the 4-month-old puppy in the middle of the roadway and leave the area.

The puppy was found wandering near the 66500 block of San Marcus Drive on Friday.

"Believing the dog may have simply gotten out, the resident checked surveillance footage, only to learn the heartbreaking truth: the puppy had been intentionally abandoned by an unknown female," DHSPD wrote on social media. "With temperatures rising, the resident stepped in and provided the puppy with shelter and care. The footage was later turned over to Desert Hot Springs Animal Control."

Desert Hot Springs Police Department officers identified and contacted the responsible individual on Monday. She was arrested and charged under PC 597 – Animal Cruelty. Her identity was not released.

"DHSPD does not take pet abandonment lightly and will seek prosecution for those who harm or neglect animals. We also want to remind our community: YOU HAVE OPTIONS," DHSPD wrote. "If you are unable to care for your pet, please do not abandon them. Desert Hot Springs Animal Control can assist with resources, guidance, and safe alternatives to ensure your pet is properly cared for."
