The Golf House is built on Brad Whalen’s passion for golf, family and giving back

BERMUDA DUNES, Calif. (KESQ) -- For Brad Whalen, golf has always been about more than the score.

The local golf instructor has spent 35 years teaching the game, but his connection to golf began much earlier in Scotland, where he was raised and turned professional at 17.

Now in the United States, Whalen is continuing his career as a golf instructor in the Coachella Valley. His latest chapter is The Golf House, an indoor facility that combines instruction and technology to help golfers improve their games.

The facility uses video and other technology to analyze swings and provide golfers with the information most relevant to their individual needs.

But for Whalen, the technology is only part of the experience.

"My favorite memories are not shooting low scores and playing in golf tournaments," Whalen said. "They were playing with my dad and my uncle and my brother and now my son."

Those memories are a major reason Whalen wants to introduce more people to the game, particularly young golfers.

The Golf House is working to develop a junior golf program focused not necessarily on producing professional golfers, but on helping kids develop a genuine love for the game.

"We really want to create a really good junior golf program and get them out playing golf," said Whalen. "It's more about having them fall in love with the game of golf."

For Whalen, that passion is ultimately about creating opportunities for families to spend time together and make memories through golf.

His message to those who have never tried the game is simple: Give it a chance.

"It's more fun than you think it is," Whalen said. "It's not the easiest game to get really good at, but it's really easy to get in and play."

At The Golf House, Whalen hopes to use his experience, technology and passion for the game to help golfers of all ages — while giving the next generation the opportunity to discover what golf has meant to him and his family.
