Gridiron Girl: Daniela Gutierrez entering second season for Desert Mirage football

THERMAL, Calif. (KESQ) -- High school football is back this week with most local teams kicking off their seasons Friday.

However, two teams will get an early start on Thursday, including the Desert Mirage Rams.

One player in particular on the Rams' roster is drawing attention for taking a less traditional path onto the football field.

While many girls are playing flag football, junior Daniela Gutierrez has chosen to play tackle football for the Desert Mirage boys team.

Gutierrez is a defensive lineman entering her second season with the Rams. She said she has never felt out of place and considers her teammates family.

For Gutierrez, playing football is about more than simply being part of a team. It is about following through on a commitment she made to herself.

“I really like being committed to one thing, and I don't like quitting at all,” Gutierrez said. “I also hate losing, so I feel like me being here is already like being really committed to myself.”

Gutierrez's story is one of determination and perseverance as she continues to compete alongside her teammates on the Desert Mirage boys football team.

Stay tuned to News Channel 3 for the full story on Gutierrez on Sunday, August 23.
