3.4-magnitude earthquake strikes near Ontario

ONTARIO, Calif. (KESQ) — A preliminary magnitude 3.4 earthquake struck the Inland Empire early Wednesday morning near the city of Ontario, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred at approximately 5:37 a.m., with the epicenter located about a few miles southeast of Ontario, according to the USGS.

The shaking was felt across parts of Southern California. Reports submitted through the USGS Interactive Map indicated that residents as far away as Irvine, Anaheim, Menifee, Riverside, San Bernardino and West Covina experienced the earthquake.

The USGS Felt Report received 226 responses, with most people describing the shaking as light.

The earthquake also prompted a response from San Bernardino County officials, who posted on Instagram asking residents whether they had felt the tremor.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries following the earthquake.

Small earthquakes are relatively common throughout Southern California, where numerous active faults produce frequent seismic activity. While Wednesday morning's earthquake was strong enough to be felt across a broad area, its preliminary magnitude was not expected to cause significant damage.

The USGS may update the earthquake's magnitude, location or other details as additional seismic data are reviewed.
