25 years later: Indio unveils permanent 9/11 memorial featuring World Trade Center steel

INDIO, Calif. (KESQ) - Twenty-five years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, the City of Indio is marking the anniversary with the dedication of a new permanent memorial.

The memorial at Miles Avenue Park is built around a 12-foot steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center.

The city held a remembrance ceremony Friday morning, bringing together community members, local leaders and first responders to honor the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks on September 11, 2001.

The memorial was designed by artist James Dinh and is intended to serve as a permanent place for reflection and remembrance in the Coachella Valley.

The dedication comes as communities across the country mark 25 years since the attacks.

News Channel 3 was at Friday’s ceremony and is speaking with those who remember that day, and those working to make sure its meaning is carried forward for generations who were not yet alive.
