First DAC boys and girls cross-country meet of the season held at Xavier Prep

PALM DESERT, Calif. (KESQ) -- The first Desert Athletic Conference cross country race of the season featured 14 local programs, combing all three leagues (DEL, DVL, SVL).

The girls race was highlighted by a dominant performance from Palm Desert junior Marina Avila.

Avila was in control from the start of the girls race, cruising to a decisive victory and separating herself from the rest of the field.

But after crossing the finish line, Avila showed that her character extends well beyond her performance on the course.

After blowing away the competition, Avila stayed around to support her fellow runners, handing out water and giving hugs to competitors as they finished.

For Avila, the victory was only part of the story.

On the boys side, the race was much more competitive, with a pack of runners still together around the halfway point.

La Quinta’s Kaden Rivera eventually broke away from the pack and pulled ahead to claim first place.

In the team standings, Shadow Hills won the girls competition, while La Quinta and Indio finished tied for first in the boys competition.

The opening Desert Athletic Conference race provided plenty of competition and excitement.
