Coachella breaks ground on $50 million Avenue 50 bridge project aimed at improving safety, boosting economic growth

City of Coachella

COACHELLA, Calif. (KESQ) — A major infrastructure project is officially underway in Coachella, with city leaders breaking ground Thursday morning on a new $50 million bridge along Avenue 50.

The new bridge will span the Coachella Valley Stormwater Channel, replacing an existing low-water crossing that has experienced flooding and road closures during major storms.

But city leaders say the project is about much more than preventing flooding.

The investment is expected to improve traffic flow, strengthen connections to nearby highways, and support future economic development across Coachella.

The project also includes widening and realigning portions of Avenue 50, along with improvements to Tyler Street.

Coachella Mayor Frank Figueroa, city councilmembers, and regional transportation officials attended Thursday's groundbreaking ceremony at Sierra Vista Park.

City officials say the project has been in development for more than a decade, requiring extensive planning, environmental reviews, and coordination between multiple agencies.

Construction is expected to take approximately two years. According to city officials, the existing Avenue 50 crossing will remain open during construction to help minimize disruptions for drivers.

News Channel 3's Raymond Kalra attended Thursday's groundbreaking and spoke with city leaders about the project's impact on public safety, future economic development, and what residents can expect during construction.
