Presidents, lawmakers mourn former Senate ‘giant’ Harry Reid

By The Associated Press

Former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is being remembered by Democrats as well as Republicans as a skilled dealmaker who was both strong and compassionate. The Nevada Democrat died Tuesday at 82. His wife, Landra Reid, says her husband had battled pancreatic cancer for four years. Reid led the Senate under two presidents, Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Barack Obama. He retired rather than seek reelection in 2016. President Joe Biden is hailing Reid as “a dear friend and a giant of our history.” Obama called Reid an outsider who “had defied the odds and knew how to take a punch and cared about the little guy.”
