Iraqi caretaker PM in Iran to rekindle talks with Saudis

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iraq’s caretaker prime minister has met with Iranian officials in Tehran . He’s on a visit aimed at reactivating Baghdad-mediated talks between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Mustafa al-Kadhimi spoke with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi about defusing tensions in the region. Al-Kadhimi flew to Tehran from Iran’s regional rival Saudi Arabia, where he held meetings with officials in the port city of Jeddah. Although the leaders made no mention of the Sunni powerhouse during their joint press conference in Tehran, it was clear that al-Kadhimi had come to Tehran with messages from the kingdom in a bid to resume stalled political talks between the adversaries that have been held secretly in Baghdad.
