Firefighters working to snuff out all remaining hot spots at the site of a wildfire that scorched some 10 square miles of remote terrain in the far southern reaches of the San Diego area over the past week had the sprawling burn zone fully contained today.

"No fire activity was observed yesterday or overnight, and none is expected,'' Cal Fire reported Thursday morning. ``Crews will spend the day patrolling the fire area, collecting hose left on the fire line and completing all fire-suppression repair needs.''

As of 7 a.m., the San Diego County Sheriff's Office had lifted the final evacuation orders prompted by the blaze, which blackened 6,625 acres a few miles north of the U.S.-Mexico line but caused no reported structural damage or injuries.

The conflagration, dubbed the Border 2 Fire, erupted early last Thursday afternoon just west of Doghouse Junction in the Otay Mountain Wilderness Area amid dry and gusty Santa Ana conditions.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
