Man charged in Indio bar shooting pleads not guilty
A 44-year-old man who allegedly shot someone during an altercation at a bar in Indio pleaded not guilty today to attempted murder.
Jose Gabino Ulloa of La Quinta also denied a sentence-enhancing allegation of discharging a firearm causing great bodily injury, according to court records.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and denied the allegation Tuesday afternoon at the Larson Justice Center in Indio.
Officers responded around 11:43 p.m. Wednesday to Neil's Lounge in the 80-900 block of Highway 111 in Indio to a report of a disturbance, according to public information officer Ben Guitron of the Indio Police Department.
"While police officers were in route to the call, additional information received advised an individual was suffering from a gunshot wound," Guitron said in a statement. "Indio Fire/Cal Fire paramedics responded and transported the gunshot victim to a local hospital, where the victim remains in critical condition."
It was not immediately known what led up to or motivated the shooting. A description of the victim was not provided.
Guitron said patrons and staff from the business had Ulloa detained along with a firearm by the time officers arrived on the scene.
Ulloa was subsequently arrested and booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center, where he remains held on $1 million bail, according to court records.
The investigation was ongoing and anyone with information was asked to call the police department at 760-391-4051 or Valley Crime Stoppers anonymously at 760-341-7867 (STOP).
