Karina Quintanilla sworn in as Palm Desert’s first Latina mayor

On Thursday, Palm Desert City Councilmember Karina Quintanilla became the city's first Latina and youngest female mayor.

Just a few hours before her big moment, she hosted a "Celebration of Gratitude" at Civic Center Park.

News Channel 3's Peter Daut spoke with Quintanilla about making history and her goals for Palm Desert.

"My goals are to do more outreach in the community. It is my personal philosophy that the government should come to the people. There is a lot of information on our website, absolutely, but I believe we need to do more in other events," Quintanilla said.

Quintanilla added, "I think we need to have a greater presence at school events, or places where families and parents gather, more evening things. I know that would take conversations with management and city staff, but how do we get that out there? Bilingual outreach."

You can watch a full, in-depth interview with Quintanilla at the top of the article.
