Rancho Mirage accepting applications to fill city council vacancy

Rancho Mirage is accepting applications from qualified candidates to fill the city council vacancy following Richard Kite's resignation.

"The City Council is now seeking a qualified individual to fill a vacancy on the Rancho Mirage City Council. Interested individuals may submit their application to the City Clerk’s office on or before 5:00 p.m. on November 30, 2023," reads a message on the city's website.

The city council will select the interim councilmember during its Dec. 5 meeting.

Kite announced his resignation on Nov. 7. The longtime valley resident served on the city council since 2000.

Kite was present at Thursday's city council meeting, his final one as an elected official of the city. The city and its residents paid tribute to Kite's 23-year tenure at the start of the meeting.

Steve Downs, who was Mayor Pro-Tem, was sworn in as the city's mayor on Thursday. The city of Rancho Mirage rotates the role of mayor among councilmembers every year in December.

Kite's term was set to expire in Nov. 2024. Whoever is selected to fill the vacancy will serve out the remainder of the term.
