John Cox speaks on his run for governor in the Coachella Valley

John Cox is a businessman and entrepreneur and he is running to be the new governor of California. This amid recall efforts for current Governor Gavin Newsom.

Cox was in the Coachella Valley on Wednesday at Castelli's restaurant in Palm Desert as part of his "Meet the Beast" tour. On other legs of the tour he brings a bear along, that didn't happen this time. “We’ve got to have this state fixed and that starts with recalling our pretty boy governor Gavin Newsom and electing someone who is going to be a beast about fixing this state,” said Cox.

Cox spent time talking about the mismanagement from Governor Newsom amid the pandemic. “Things in California aren’t so beautiful these days, 40,000 restaurants have closed during this shut down,” said Cox. When asked what he would have done differently, he said he would not have shut down restaurants and hotels.

“I was closed for 9 months of this pandemic,” said restaurant owner Michael Castelli. When restaurants were able to open outdoors, he spent time and money building an outdoor dining area. Soon after, another shut down came. “Which is the season out here, December and January so it really hurt the restaurant industry through the valley,” said Castelli.

If elected, Cox said he wants to first address the high cost of housing in the state. “Working people have had to leave. They just can't afford life here anymore. They can’t afford housing, the utilities, the taxes,” said Cox. “Housing is at every single cost we have. It’s the largest single expenditure in any budget so it’s the thing you attack the first,” added Cox.

He also spoke about his intention to create a strong public education system. “I don’t care if you’re LGBT, a person of color, or whoever you are, an immigrant. You deserve to have the opportunity for a great education and that’s not being given today,” said Cox. He said throwing billions at buying hotel rooms is not the way to solve the homeless crisis. Instead, he spoke on treating the illness and addiction.
