2020 Wheelchair Championships to be at Indian Wells Tennis Garden

INDIAN WELLS, Calif., February 6, 2020 – The Indian Wells Tennis Garden, a world-renowned tennis venue best known for hosting the BNP Paribas Open, will welcome the 2020 Indian Wells Tennis Garden Wheelchair Championships from Thursday, February 13 – Sunday, February 16.

The Indian Wells Tennis Garden Wheelchair Championships will feature players from across the globe, and include top players David Wagner, Nick Taylor, Emmy Kaiser and more competing in the Coachella Valley. Wagner, an eight-time Paralympic medalist who competes in the Quad division, is one of the most accomplished players in the history of the sport with 19 Grand Slam titles. He is currently ranked No. 3 in the world in both quad singles and quad doubles. Taylor is also a Quad division competitor whose accolades include 11 Grand Slam titles – all of them in quad doubles alongside Wagner – and five Paralympic medals. On the women’s side, Kaiser is a two-time Paralympian who has earned five Para Pan Am Games medals.

Both men’s and women’s singles and doubles will be featured and provide players with a chance to compete for cash prizes and ITF ranking points, as well as the opportunity to qualify for the Para Pan Am Games, the World Team Cup and the Paralympic Games.

“We’re so excited to once again welcome the best wheelchair tennis players in the world to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for this fantastic four-day event,” said Indian Wells Tennis Garden Club Director Fred Hartzman. “Our goal is always to put on a world-class event that is worthy of the incredible dedication and commitment that these competitors put into their craft.”

Held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for the ninth consecutive year, the Wheelchair Championships is part of the ITF UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, which boasts over 150 tournaments across 40 different countries in every region of the world and offers nearly $3 million USD in total prize money.

One of the fastest growing wheelchair sports in the world, wheelchair tennis is played in the same way as able-bodied tennis, with the only exception being that a wheelchair tennis player is allowed two bounces of the ball. Men and women compete separately in the Open division, while players with higher levels of impairment compete in the mixed Quad division.

Tickets to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden Wheelchair Championships are free, and the tournament is open to the public. For more information on the tournament, please visit the Indian Wells Tennis Garden website.
