Former local standout leads Asher Tour event at Bermuda Dunes Country Club

BERMUDA DUNES, Calif. (KESQ) -- The Asher Tour, a professional developmental mini tour, is in the Coachella Valley this week for the Bermuda Dunes Championship.

The tournament, part of the Pacific Golf Series, teed off Wednesday at Bermuda Dunes Country Club.

Former Palm Desert High School standout Charlie Reiter leads the field after shooting a 7-under 65 in the opening round.

Reiter is one of several local players competing in the event, which provides an opportunity for golfers to test themselves against players looking to advance to the next level of professional golf.

“It’s like the PGA Tour or the Korn Ferry Tour,” local player John Kim said. “Any of them can make it to the tour. It’s a really high-competition tournament, so it’s an honor to play in this.”

Kim and fellow local golfer Chris Alderete also competed in the opening round.

“I hit it and played as good as I possibly could,” Alderete said. “If a few more drop, it could have been a little bit more, but it’s off to a good start, so you can’t ask for anything more than that.”

The Bermuda Dunes Championship concludes Friday, with a $15,000 first-place prize on the line.
