La Quinta girls golf takes down Palm Desert for first time in 32 years
COACHELLA VALLEY, Calif. (KESQ) -- The La Quinta girls golf program recently reached a milestone more than three decades in the making.
The Blackhawks recently defeated rival Palm Desert for the first time in 32 years, ending a long stretch of dominance by one of the Coachella Valley's premier high school sports programs.
"Our goal every year is to beat Palm Desert, which is a tall task," La Quinta head coach Mark Williams said. "They're the most dominant team in high school sports in the valley, I believe, in all sports."
For the Blackhawks, the victory was the result of hard work, determination and a willingness to adjust after coming up just short earlier in the season.
La Quinta initially lost to Palm Desert by just one stroke before regrouping and changing its strategy to earn the historic win.
"We kind of regrouped, changed our strategy a little bit, and we were able to come out on top for the first time in school history," Williams said. "It was a big accomplishment for the program, for the girls, for myself. It was a great day."
The breakthrough was especially rewarding for the players, who said the result reflected the hours they had put into improving throughout the season.
"I'm not even surprised because we've done so much, we've practiced so much, and I feel like we kind of deserve that," La Quinta freshman golfer Julia Sargent said.
Junior and team captain Sasha Gomez said the moment was one she would remember for the rest of her life.
"Such a special feeling that I'm gonna remember forever," Gomez said. "I just remember looking at all my teammates' faces, and we were all just so happy. We knew that all of our hard work and dedication and all the hours we put in really had paid off."
For La Quinta, the win represents more than a rivalry victory. It is a breakthrough for a program that has spent years chasing Palm Desert and finally found a way to come out on top.
