Student Athlete of the Week – Maricarmen Aceves

CV girls soccer is among the elite soccer programs in our desert. Don’t just believe me, believe three-straight DVL titles. Senior Maricarmen Aceves has been the leader for all three, and this year she wants a fourth.

“Winning the league title is a very important thing. It’s happened three years already since I’ve been here and it’s very important to us,” said Aceves. “We know it’s our responsibility to play good for our school and represent. Because the school has a lot of bad fame but when we come out here we do great things and give it the good name it deserves.”

“Maricarmen has been apart of our soccer program for four years. When she was coming in she was actually coming off a torn ACL as an eighth grader,” said head coach Francisco Morales.

“From day one she was a really hard worker, committed, never missed a practice even though she knew she wasn’t going to get a lot of opportunities to play because of the surgery,” said Morales. “She was always ready to work.”

“It’s my distraction,” said Aceves. “I come over here with my teammates, my friends, my family, whoever I’m playing with it’s just so fun. It’s my getaway and helps me keep my mind off school and keep my mind off other things.”

Maricarmen’s impact at CV is more than just what she does on the soccer field.

“She is a big presence everywhere throughout the day for the girls,” said Morales. “Academically sets the example for them. How they need to be and how they need to work.”

An AP student in the classroom, Maricarmen also is a selfless leader for the Mighty Arabs.

“She doesn’t think about it scoring first, she thinks about what the team needs to get the best opportunities. I think a lot of times people underestimate her. But she’ll have 20 goals in a season and 20 assists,” said Morales. “She is one of our more well rounded players that we ever had in our program.”

“I love the soccer team here, the environment, the people, the culture. Everything is just amazing,” said Aceves.

“Because of her heart and hard work and her values that she gets from her family, those will motivate her to be successful in anything she does in life,” said Morales.
