WTA Finals coming to Indian Wells Tennis Garden for first time in tournament history

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (KESQ) -- The Coachella Valley is preparing to host one of the biggest events in women's tennis, as the WTA Finals come to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden for the first time in the tournament's history.

The season-ending championship is scheduled for Nov. 8-15, bringing together the top eight singles players and top eight doubles teams in the Women's Tennis Association for a week of elite competition.

All matches will be played inside Stadium 2, with players competing for a multi-million dollar prize pool and two prestigious trophies: the Billie Jean King Trophy in singles and the Martina Navratilova Trophy in doubles.

Andrew Krasny, the tournament's host and emcee, said the event's unique format and the opportunity to see the world's best players compete locally make it a special occasion for the Coachella Valley.

"Year-long players are competing for enough points to qualify for the finals at the end of the year. They're playing for millions of dollars. It's one of the most prestigious events of the year, and the fact that it's in our own backyard and the format is what's so unique," Krasny said.

Unlike traditional tournaments, where top-ranked players can face lower-ranked opponents in the early rounds, the WTA Finals feature only the season's top eight singles players and top eight doubles teams.

"Not here in November. The top eight players of the world, every match can be like a Grand Slam final, and it really is," Krasny said.

The round-robin format gives fans the opportunity to watch the world's top players face one another throughout the tournament, adding to the significance of each matchup.

The WTA Finals will bring another major international sporting event to the Coachella Valley, with the Indian Wells Tennis Garden set to host a championship that showcases the best of women's professional tennis.
