Cooler and cloudier Sunday as tropical activity influences valley weather

THOUSAND PALMS, Calif. (KESQ) – This weekend presents fairly quiet weather for us locally, but we're watching the potential impacts of hurricanes spinning to our south. Hurricane Polo continues its march closer to Baja California, where it's likely to make landfall in the coming days.

As seen below, Hurricane Odalys (on the left) looks to stay well off the coast. Models show Hurricane Polo (on the right) gradually weakening as it approaches Baja California. It is expected to make landfall on Monday as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane.

While direct impacts are unlikely, we're watching the moisture that could be drawn into the desert southwest thanks to these two storms. Starting Sunday, monsoonal flow could start inviting in some moisture in our area. The valley is on the outer reaches of the brunt of that moisture, but to our east (particularly in Arizona and western New Mexico), increased flash flooding is possible with T-storms more likely.

Since we're not in the direct path of this monsoonal moisture, our dew point models actually show a drop for Sunday. We could see dew point temperatures fall to the 30s, meaning things will feel nice and dry. This could change if the flow shifts further westward, but right now, this should make things comfortable for your Sunday plans.

Cloud cover should be on the rise, even if rain chances appear unlikely Sunday.

Temperatures will also cool for Sunday with highs hovering near or below seasonal.

The coolest days of the week are likely Monday and Tuesday. We're watching potential rainfall from the tropical moisture flowing in from Odalys and Polo, but that scenario appears unlikely right now. We'll be monitoring it all very closely, so be sure to stick with us for the latest forecast info!
