Fire on train stops rail traffic in Indio

The engine compartment of a locomotive caught fire in Indio Thursday, but no one was injured, a county fire department spokeswoman said. The fire, reported at 12:30 p.m. at Avenue 48 and Indio Boulevard, was contained to plastics in the train’s engine compartment shortly after 1 p.m., Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Melody Hendrickson said.

A man died while hiking in Idyllwild Thursday. Cal Fire says someone reported the hiker down on the Ernie Maxwell Trail at Humber Park at 10:50am.
