Dress for success with tips for back-to-school shopping
With school almost back in session, it’s time to think about how your child can dress for success. There are a number of factors to consider, like dress code, which varies per school, as well as giving your student comfort and creativity with their look.

“They need to try it on. They need to feel good in it. They need to like themselves in it,” Bergen Carey, parent of four children said . “They’re at the age where if they like it, they’re going to wear it, and you’re going to get your use out of it.”
You may also have a picky little dresser, like Carey’s step-daughter Averee, who said, “I have to try it on because if I don’t, and I don’t like it, I won’t use it.”
Bergen says uniforms and keeping it basic in her children’s wardrobes have helped her manage her family’s clothing purchases. “A lot of schools actually offer T-shirts, so you can get some school shirts…and they have a used section, so if you don’t want to spend a lot of money, then you can pick up some pre-used shirts.”
Parents we spoke with seemed to like uniform selections from Target and Macy’s for the quality and price.
“We have Nautica and Polo, so even though you’re in your school uniform, you can still wear your favorite brand,” Scott Wetter, vice president of Macy’s in Palm Desert, said.
Wetter and personal stylist Kim Richards agreed the classics never seem to fail.
“We’re still in the denim, denim, denim. It’s still hot this time of year, so we see a lot of denim shorts and of course the denim jean jackets and even bomber jackets are big, and then you get the printed tees with all the sayings and cute stuff on it, and then printed dresses and tops [with] little tiny flowers and things.”
For the boys, active wear and plaid are in, and if you’re curious to see what other styles are popular this year, Macy’s is holding a back-to-school fashion show on Saturday, August 12. That also happens to land on the same day as their “Shop for a Cause” event. If you donate $5, you’ll receive a 25 percent discount on purchases. That may be a good time to pick up a sweater for your student as well. Even though we live in the desert, scorching temperatures don’t necessarily follow students into class.
“Classrooms can tend to be cold, so you have to get like your typical clothes that will fit for that,” Katelyn Christensen, a student at Shadow hills High School, said.

Some parents said grabbing a nice pair of sneakers that can last your child the entire year is probably one of the better investments you can make when doing your back-to-school shopping.
“Shoes are super expensive right now, and name brands are all the hit,” Olivia Ocampo, a local parent, said. She tries to look out for the best buy one get one type deals. “Dick’s has that, Famous Footwear, a few of the stores in the mall also have that buy one, get one half off, so if you have two kids, there you go!”
Finally, if you’re tired of long days of trying on clothes and waiting for your turn in line, there’s always online shopping.
