Son arrested for murder of DHS ice cream man
The son of the 64-year-old man found beaten to death in his Desert Hot Springs home has been charged with murder.
Jose Angel Velasco, 36, was arrested Sunday in Los Angeles in connection with the death of Jose Luis Velasco, who was found dead inside his home by sheriff’s deputies on Aug. 1.
Velasco was transported back to Riverside County and booked into custody for murder at the Robert Presley Detention Center.
There are no other outstanding suspects in connection with this investigation, authorities said.
Velasco is being held on $1 million bail and is slated to be arraigned a week from today in Indio.
Meanwhile, Jose Angel Velasco, is mourned. He was a well-known ice cream man who was popular in the community.
“He was very polite, he is very nice, he always has beautiful smile, all the time everyday. He was a very happy person,” said Teresa Ortega, Velasco’s niece.
Velasco’s family is holding a food sale this Saturday starting at noon at 16280 Via Corto West in Desert Hot Springs to raise money to pay for funeral expenses.
