College fair hosted at Agua Caliente Resort

A college fair is being hosted on October 6. from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Agua Caliente Resort. My College Fair is hosting the event for its eighth consecutive year for Coachella Valley students who are interested in pursuing a higher education. This is the second time the fair is being hosted in person since being held virtually for two years due to Covid-19 restrictions. 

My College Fair was created and is co-chaired by Dr. Julio Omier, the assistant principal of Rancho Mirage High, and Kate Anderson, the Director of Public Relations at Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. One Future Coachella, a local college preparatory organization, also had a part in the creation of My College Fair. 

College applications can be difficult to navigate but My College Fair says that their goal is to make it easier for students to pursue higher education

“It brings the reality that they can do it, we want to showcase to students that if they have a dream, that dream is capable and reachable, but they have to see it and feel it. So we're bringing the colleges to them. So they can experience that," said Dr. Julio Omier, co-chair of My College Fair.

Representatives of over seventy-five colleges and trade schools will be in attendance tomorrow.

Some students say they are looking forward to making connections with college representatives at this event.

“What better time to ask better questions? Those are the college reps and college officers and stuff so who’s better to ask than them?," said Genesys Corado Galicia, senior at Rancho Mirage High School.

Omier says that another goal of My College Fair is to have former students come back to the valley.

Osiel Moreno is another Rancho Mirage High School senior who has plans to attend the My College Fair event. Moreno says he is already considering coming back to the valley after he graduates.

“I’m looking forward to having a job in the professional sports industry. With the new arena coming to the Coachella Valley, coming back is certainly an option," said Osiel Moreno, senior at Rancho Mirage High School.

On their website, My College Fair provides a resource guide which explains everything from what college is to how students can get their college applications ready. The guide is available in both English and Spanish.

All My College Fair attendees must register online. Registration is free and open to the public.
