Indio apartment complex residents receive free internet access
A free public wifi hotspot was unveiled Tuesday morning for local farmworkers and their families living at an Indio housing complex, providing the residents with internet connectivity, as well as a renovated computer lab.
The wifi hotspot, is one of six installed throughout the Coachella Valley by Frontier Communications for the residents of the Villa Hermosa apartments, a low-cost housing complex developed by the Coachella Valley Housing Coalition.
Assemblyman Eduardo Garcia, D-Coachella, and representatives from Frontier attended the ribbon cutting.
Karol Ortiz a resident of the apartment complex is thankful for today’s unveiling , “I feel lucky because many people can have free internet and computers.” She goes on to add, “the internet is important to me because I have to do my homework on the internet and without the internet I would not be able to do my homework.
Officials say that the efforts, along with legislative efforts like AB 1665, the Internet for All Now Act of 2017, will help “bridge the digital divide” that cuts much-needed internet access from certain portions of the population, particularly in rural, low-income communities.
