Cathedral City residents invited to weigh in on downtown park design
Cathedral City residents are invited to have their voices heard Monday night regarding the city’s proposed outdoor amphitheater downtown park, which city officials envision will be home to cultural events and festivals in the near future.
The park, slated for completion in late 2018, will be built on a lot at the corner of Avenida Lalo Guerrero and Cathedral Canyon Drive. A $1.4 million State Parks Grant was awarded to the city earlier this year for the park’s construction.
Residents are asked to offer their input at tonight’s 5:00 p.m. meeting at City Hall on design concepts created by Portland-based David Evans and Associates. A contract with the firm was approved by the city council in June.
Officials said the park’s amenities will include an amphitheater, walking trails, a children’s play area, shade trellis, restroom and concession facilities, landscape, lighting and fencing.
“The new park and the adjacent Festival Lawn along East Palm Canyon Drive will serve as an important anchor to creating an entertainment district in our downtown,” Mayor Stan Henry said when the grant was received in February.
“Having an outdoor amphitheater will allow the city to attract additional festivals, offer greater amenities for our three signature events, and provide a venue for smaller theatrical events like ‘Shakespeare in the Park’ by our local high school students.”
