Granada Hills man identified in deadly wreck
A man and dog are dead after a single-car crash on Interstate 10 early Monday morning, two miles east of Hayfield Road in Chiriaco Summit.
The Riverside County Coroners Office identified the Granada Hills man as Edwin Steighorst, 49.
California Highway Patrol officers received a report of a fire in that area along the freeway’s westbound lanes. Cal Fire arrived and put out the brush fire, which they later found out was ignited by a car engine.
Personnel followed a trail of debris and found the wrecked car. Steighorst and a dog died. No other people were believed to have been in the car at the time of the crash. No other vehicles were involved.
Officers tell KESQ News Channel 3 / CBS Local 2 News the car was traveling westbound and then crashed off the freeway over a wash. The 2018 Hyundai Elantra’s engine fell out and into the wash causing the brush fire.
The CHP said neither alcohol nor drugs were factors. Officials think the driver, Steighorst, may have fallen asleep behind wheel.
