Manhunt continues for suspect behind fatal hit-&-run
The search continues for an Anza man suspected of committing a deadly hit-&-run in Aguanga Friday morning.
The Riverside County Sheriff's Department shut down a portion of one Rancho Mirage neighborhood at San Gorgonio Way and Dune Views Road late Friday afternoon. That's where law enforcement believes the suspect was hiding out.
Watch: Police searching for suspect wanted for deadly hit-and-run
Police later revealed they are looking 23-year-old Antone Wayne Bayard, of Anza.
Bayard is wanted for his role in a crash that killed a 63-year-old Aguanga woman on SR-371 just north of Wilson Valley Road. Police say Bayard fled the scene on foot and later ended up in Rancho Mirage Friday night. Neighbors who live in the area were shocked.
"I’ve lived here over 20 years. I’ve never seen anything like this," Rancho Mirage resident Tim Esser said.
Residents say a helicopter flew over the area for hours, as police searched on foot.
"All the police cars, they were on microphones. There were about 3 or 4 that kept patrolling down the street. They were definitely on their game looking for this bad guy," Esser said.
CHP says two officers were involved in an altercation with Bayard. Both suffered minor injuries before the suspect got away.
Bayard is described as a white male, 25-30 years of age, last seen wearing a black beanie type head cover, and a dark-colored hoodie type sweatshirt.
Authorities believe Bayard is now in Temecula or San Diego, and plans to flee to Mexico. Anyone with information is asked to contact CHP.
