First Alert Weather Alert: Excessive Heat Continues
An Excessive Heat Warning will stay in effect through 8PM this evening. Local mountains and areas west of the valley will remain under a Heat Advisory for the same timeframe.
We will continue to feel the effects of a ridge of high pressure today. Near record breaking heat will be present in the Coachella Valley again this afternoon. The record high temperature for today in Palm Springs is 118°F. We are forecasting a high of 117°F, so records today are certainly in danger. Highs across the Desert Southwest will range between 8-10 degrees above normal.
As well, an Ozone Advisory has been issued by South Coast Air Quality Management District through this evening. Unhealthy air quality is possible as high temperatures increase ozone formation rates.
Now is the time to put heat safety into practice! Remember the following to avoid heat exhaustion or heat stroke:
- Reduce time in the sun
- Stay in air conditioning
- Take frequent shade breaks
- Stay hydrated
- Check on elderly, children, and pets
Onshore winds will increase today and tomorrow. Winds may be gustier today and tomorrow than over the weekend. This is a factor in today and tomorrow's elevated fire risk.
Expect temperatures around 112° for Independence Day. The increased winds will help bring a gradual cooling trend to the valley this week.
