DSUSD students taste test foods from cafeteria vendors to provide feedback on school lunches

The Desert Sands Unified School District is trying something new to get students interested in their school lunches.

Students from La Quinta Middle School and Truman Elementary School had the opportunity to taste various foods from several cafeteria vendors and give feedback to the nutrition services team.

The school district tells News Channel 3 that the project was started after a student in the culinary program realized that too much food was going to waste.

"I saw that a lot of food getting wasted at schools. And also, like, a lot of kids don't like the school's food. Like they don't really like it, they don't really eat it. So I thought, if I could change that kids would eat it more, have a more enjoyable meal at school, and not waste their food," said Ashlynn Soto, a student in the culinary program and Girl Scout.

Soto, who is involved in the event, is working on it as part of her "gold award" for Girl Scouts.
