Scouts install new boards at Freedom Park’s baseball fields

Scouts from Troop 1701 gave back to Palm Desert this weekend through the work of their Eagle Scout Project.

They installed backboards for two baseball fields at Freedom Park.

"After Hurricane Hilary came down, it kind of devastated the park a little bit, just because the park is designed to take water," said Life Scout, Caleb Rios.

His Eagle project was to help prepare the damaged backboards on the baseball diamond at Freedom Park.

Rios said his project was comprised of two phases.

"The first phase is getting all the boards that were donated by the city of Palm Desert. I had a team just paint them and make sure they looked all nice and colorful for when I was going to be replacing them. My second phase is having a series of boys out today and adults, and they're basically just helping me take off the old wooden back boards and disposing of them and putting on the new ones to help the park look a lot better," said Rios.

Scoutmaster, Michael Abril explained that Eagle Scout projects are intended to, "benefit the community as a whole and allows the scouts to show their leadership skills by organizing, and working with other scouts and adults in order to complete the project."

Rios says he is hoping to earn his Eagle rank in honor of his grandfather who was two merit badges short of becoming an Eagle Scout himself.
