Hispanic Councilmember addresses split in Latino support ahead of former President Trump’s visit

Hispanic Cathedral City councilmember Ernesto M. Gutierrez said he will attend former President Trump's rally on Saturday.

"As a Republican councilmember and Hispanic, I’m beyond thrilled that Former President Donald J. Trump will be here in our valley,"  Gutierrez said. "I will be attending his rally and I’m completely excited about it. Our Latino community needs to hear Trump’s message of hope."

The 2024 U.S. presidential race is showing signs of shifting Latino voter preferences, with former President Donald Trump gaining ground among this demographic compared to previous election cycles.

The Latino community is the second largest group of eligible voters in the United States according to Pew Research.

On both sides of the aisle, debate intensifies among local leaders over who will secure the latino vote.

"Many people that come from other countries are the same. They love this country. They just want an opportunity to actually get it, do everything legal," Gutierrez said. "They have to be well vetted. We can't just allow criminals that are coming across the border."

Congressman Raul Ruiz said Trump's hateful immigration policies will impact several industries.

"We need to elect Kamala Harris, who is going to secure our border, who is going to have a comprehensive immigration reform with the pathway to citizenship, a pathway to improve our economy, stabilize our workforce for our agricultural industry, our tourism industry and our construction industries," Ruiz said.
