College of the Desert opens new “Dreamer Resource Center”
College of the Desert opened their new Dreamer Resource Center at the Palm Desert Campus this Monday.
Students, faculty and parents gathered around the amphitheater in support of the resource center for undocumented students.
Joel L. Kinnanmon, Superintendent of College of the Desert, emphasizes how important this day is for the dreamers.
"This past September marked the two year anniversary of the federal administration's decision to resend DACA, the deferred action for childhood arrival's program," said Kinnamon.
The president also focused on the enrollment for undocumented students at College of the Desert.
" Last year the college enrolled nearly 900 undocumented students," said Kinnamon. "The undocumented immigrant population makes up more than six percent of California's population."
Monica Jimenez Jaime, club president of ALAS, a club that supports undocumented students with resources, is finally seeing her club's dream come to a reality.
"I feel really excited not only for me cause I got to see the center be built and grow from an idea to actually a space but I just feel really excited to see other generations of students get enjoy and really use the center," said Jaime.
Not only is Monica Jimenez Jaime having an impact on club members but also on her family.
"Its just a really big deal to me my mom didn't get a chance to study. It wasnt in her household they didn't really allow it so for her to be seeing me here pushing through all that," said Jaime.
The Dream Act continues to be a bill fought in Washington.
The mission of the Dreamer Resource Center is to improve student success and help to successfully transition AB 540 students into college. The center provides academic advising, counseling and student services program referrals in a welcoming environment. The center also provides California Dream Act application assistance, scholarship resources and informational workshops regarding DACA Renewal, Know Your Rights and more.
