Firebirds fall to Condors 5-4 in overtime for third straight loss of the season

THOUSAND PALMS, Calif. (KESQ) The Coachella Valley Firebirds lost to the Bakersfield Condors 5-4 in overtime on Sunday at Dignity Health Arena.

For the first time this season, the Firebirds opened the scoring. Carson Rehkopf tallied his first goal of his AHL career to give the birds the 1-0 lead.

The Condors, 14 seconds later, made the game even at one with a goal from Luke Prokop.

Coachella Valley wasn't done scoring in the opening frame. Ben Meyers found the back of the net twice to extend the Firebirds' lead to 3-1.

In the second period, Bakersfield took over. Max Jones and James Hamblin made it a 3-3 game with a little over six minutes to go in the middle frame.

In the third period, Firebirds came out hot with a goal from Jacob Melanson.

The Condors were down but never out. Rem Pitlick lit the lamp for the game-tying goal with under seven minutes to go.

In overtime, Bakersfield wasted no time. James Hamblin scored the game-winner only 30 seconds into the extra period.

Meyers earned the third star of the game.

Victor Ostman started in net for CV and saved 25 shots on goal.

The Firebirds fall to 0-2-1-0 on the season. Coachella Valley will remain on the road and play the San Jose Barracuda on Wednesday, October 22nd. Puck drop is at 7 PM.
