Meet at the 50: Palm Desert High School celebrates literacy across generations

PALM DESERT, Calif. (KESQ) - Palm Desert High School brought together its youngest learners and graduating seniors for “Meet at the 50,” a symbolic literacy celebration reflecting the District’s Portrait of a Graduate vision.

Students from Reagan Elementary, Carter Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, and Washington Charter School visited Palm Desert High School Tuesday morning, where they met senior students on the football field.

Each kindergartner also received a snack and a new book donated by the Riverside County Office of Education.

Sarit Saig, principal of Palm Desert High School, said seeing the kindergartners and seniors meet for the first time was electric.

“Literacy opens up doors, opens up opportunities. And for our seniors, I think it means an opportunity to pause, reflect, and be a little bit nostalgic about all that they've been able to accomplish over the last 12 years to get to this point," said Saig.

350 kindergartners were in attendance from the four different feeder schools and 450 seniors read with them. The gathering symbolizes a commitment to graduating high school.

This was the second annual event and organizers hope to continue "Meet at the 50" for years to come.
