Indio police chief releases statement about car break-ins
Indio Police Chief Mike Washburn has released a statement in response to KESQ’s recent report about a rash of car break-ins in North Indio.
“Some of you may have seen a KESQ story on car break-ins in North Indio. I wanted to provide some perspective and some facts,” Washburn wrote in the email, “Overall, we have NOT been receiving more than an ordinary number of car break-ins citywide. We have received some concerns from two of our North Indio neighborhoods, which suggest they are seeing more activity in a very short period of time.”
Washburn went on to say that the department is “setting up meetings” to address the North Indio break-ins. The Indio Police Department has “only received 4 reports” of car break-ins since Dec. 14th, according to Washburn.
“Our Detectives and officers have been reviewing video from several vehicle prowls in order to identify those responsible,” Washburn writes. “Of the 59 reported vehicle prowls citywide, more than 30 percent of the vehicles were not locked. Additionally, the vast majority of property stolen in the 59 reported incidents was clearly visible in the passenger area of the car.”
