Cactus City rest area project expected to remain closed until Spring of 2027

CACTUS CITY, Calif. (KESQ) - Rest areas along Interstate 10 in Cactus City will be reconstructed to improve safety, and were expected to remain closed until Spring of 2027, it was announced today.

A $32.8 million Caltrans project, funded through the Road Repair and Accountability Act of 2017, will upgrade rest area facilities, which include water and waste water treatment systems upgrades, relocating electrical vehicle charging stations, additional parking spaces, curb ramps and landscape beautification.   

Officials said crews will work from 6 a.m. through 3 p.m. weekdays along Interstate 10 between Indio and Chiriaco Summit. Cactus City rest areas will be closed on both eastbound and westbound sides of the freeway.   

Motorists were urged to proceed with caution and allow for additional travel time with occasional lane closures near the area.
