Assemblyman Gonzalez’s lithium valley bill heads to Governor’s desk

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KESQ) - Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez's lithium valley bill is heading to Governor Gavin Newsom's desk.

AB 2163 passed both the California State Assembly and State Senate with bipartisan support.

The bill would establish a statewide framework to designate Strategic Energy and Critical Mineral Development Zones to support clean energy development. The bill also requires state agencies to prioritize investment within these designated zones.

Gonzalez's office said it would ensure regions like Lithium Valley are highlighted and supported as California invests further in renewable energy. His office added that the passage represents a major win for Imperial County.

“Imperial County has enormous potential, and this bill makes sure that potential cannot be overlooked when California plans for its energy future,” said Assemblyman Jeff Gonzalez. “This is exactly why representation matters. Imperial County deserves to have a voice at the Capitol, and I will continue making sure our communities are seen, heard and included in the decisions that shape the future of California.”

Newsom has until September 30 to sign AB 2163 into law.
