Mayor Zohran Mamdani to meet with President Trump in New York City

New York (CNN) — New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will meet with President Donald Trump on Monday ahead of the United Nations General Assembly, Mamdani’s office said Sunday.
The meeting will take place at Gracie Mansion, the mayoral residence in Manhattan, marking the first time Trump will meet with Mamdani on his home turf.
A spokesperson for Mamdani said the meeting would “focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers.”
Trump is scheduled to speak at the UN General Assembly in the city on Tuesday. The White House confirmed the meeting with the mayor but did not offer additional details.
Monday will mark the third time Mamdani and Trump have met in person. Their first meeting was held in the Oval Office in November 2025, shortly after Mamdani’s election, followed by a second meeting in February.
Mamdani has said when he speaks with Trump, it’s always focused on the needs of the city.
“When it comes to the president, we continue to have a conversation about how best to deliver for this city,” he told reporters. “That is a conversation that has been done in person, it’s been done over the phone, and it will continue so long as either of us have the ability to deliver for the city.”
Despite their opposing politics, Trump and Mamdani have had surprisingly amiable meetings. Staffers for Mamdani argue the mayor has chosen a diplomatic approach with the president, which has proved advantageous for the city. New York has been spared from the large-scale immigration enforcement Trump threatened during the mayoral campaign and, despite threats that he would “take over,” the president has been surprisingly complimentary of Mamdani’s stewardship of his hometown.
The mayor’s staffers declined to say exactly what Trump and Mamdani will discuss, but the president’s immigration agenda has been a consistent pressure point. Just last week, Mamdani announced a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its expansion of a rule that would make it harder for some immigrants to get green cards.
Housing, construction and infrastructure are also likely to be on the agenda. During Mamdani’s February meeting at the White House, the mayor brought visual props to help make his case for what could be the biggest federal investment in housing in 50 years. The pitch included a project with 12,000 units and a mock-up of a Daily News front page bearing the president’s face and the headline: “Trump to City: Let’s Build.”
Trump has referred to Mamdani as “my little communist” and has tried to use the mayor, a democratic socialist, as a foil, linking his politics to Democrats across the country. During his campaign, Mamdani said he would “become Donald Trump’s worst nightmare.”
Despite the rhetoric, Trump also referred to Mamdani as a “very rational person” and said he was “very comfortable” with the mayor running New York City following their first Oval Office meeting.
“The better he does, the happier I am. I will say there’s no difference in party. There’s no difference in anything, and we’re going to be helping him to make everybody’s dream come true — having a strong and very safe New York,” Trump said after the meeting.
Presidential visits to New York City’s mayoral residence are rare. Presidential records show the last president to visit was Ronald Reagan, who visited Gracie Mansion and presented then-Mayor Ed Koch with a prop check as a sign of the Reagan administration’s commitment to an infrastructure project in Manhattan.
President John F. Kennedy visited Gracie Mansion in 1962 to deliver a speech on medical care before a group of US mayors. President Jimmy Carter and first lady Rosalynn Carter were overnight guests at the mansion in 1978. Carter made the visit during an official trip to New York City and a bill signing ceremony at City Hall alongside Koch.
The Monday meeting at the mayor’s residence also comes days before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to address the United Nations on Thursday. Mamdani, an ardent critic of the Israeli government, has said he does not plan to participate in any planned demonstrations against Netanyahu.
