Friday marks the first day of school for CVUSD students
Friday marks the first day of school for the Coachella Valley Unified School District.
What is typically an exciting day for students, parents, and teachers looked a lot different this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. CVUSD schools will continue to conduct distance learning until Riverside County is off the state's monitoring list.
Despite all the changes, one thing is for sure, class will be back in session.
Teachers have had a little bit more time to prepare for distance learning, as the district and the Teachers Association agreed last week to push the first day of school, originally set for August 13, a day back in order to allow for more training.
CVUSD says the first day back is all about introductions, answering questions and making sure every student can connect their devices successfully.
“We’re taking this one day at a time. We understand their attention span, we understand they’re not in a classroom setting and we will work with them through it,” said Kelly Reilly, kindergarten teacher, Las Palmitas elementary.
The district is asking all parents to make sure their information is up to date on their parent portals to ensure everyone can receive messages from their child’s school.
“I think one of the first things that families can do is sit together and discuss what the new changes are going to be,” said Dr. Rosalind Burge, Principal, La Familia High School
They say if you have any issues with technology or wifi, don't hesitate to reach out for help.
“I think that the communication with the school and the student is going to be the key,” added Burge.

The Desert Sands Unified School District is the only district left to return to schools. DSUSD's first day of school will be on August 19.
