IMAX theater keys handed over to CVREP

Keys have been handed over to Coachella Valley Repertory Theater to take over the former Desert Cinemas IMAX in Cathedral City.

The ceremonial key exchange happened Wednesday afternoon at the new CVREP Theater on East Palm Canyon Drive.

CVREP plans to begin the first phase of renovations of turning the motion picture theater into a performing arts theater soon.

“The community will have generations to come be able to have performing arts that educate and create meaningful changes in people’s lives. It makes a community a better place to live in,” said Ron Celona, the company’s founding artistic director.

The theater company has been in a rental space for the past eight years in Rancho Mirage. CVREP hopes to conduct its first performances in the downtown Cathedral City theater by the new year.
