In July of 2016, Durjan Germain Gray, the pursuit suspect in question, was found guilty on charges of second-degree murder of a peace officer, DUI gross vehicular manslaughter, felony evading, and DUI. Gibson’s pursuit of Gray began when the latter conducted an illegal U-turn on Date Palm Drive on the night of March 18, 2011.
Gibson had served with the Cathedral City Police Department for about 18 months prior to the accident. Before serving with CCPD, he was a reserve officer with the Desert Hot Springs Police Department.
Gibson was a decorated U.S. Marine, having served two tours in Iraq. He was awarded the Purple Heart and is buried with full honors at the Riverside National Cemetery. He is survived by his wife and son.
