Desert Hot Springs establishing safety enhancement zone after uptick in collisions

Desert Hot Springs City Council is establishing a safety enhancement zone within the city after an uptick in traffic collisions over the past several years.

The safety zone will be from Camino Aventura to Pierson Boulevard on Palm Drive.

Authorities said if you get a traffic ticket in that zone, your fine will be doubled. Police said they’ve seen an increase in traffic collisions in the city since 2003.

“One of the things I noticed when I took over almost three years ago was the number of fatal accidents that we have in the city from jaywalking to inattentive driving along that Palm Drive corridor. We have had over 25 fatal accidents in 15 years in the city and that’s just not acceptable,” Mondary said.

The new safety zone will go into effect on June 19.
