Mexico World Cup upset brings in big business
Pure jubilation rang out as the final whistle blew Sunday morning, as fans celebrated at Burgers and Beer in La Quinta. Mexico defeated the heavily favored Germany 1-0 in their World Cup opening game.
“It was very exciting and emotional. i kind of wanted to cry but I don’t know if it was the hormones or just the game,” Erica Lara of Indio said.
It was a nervy game marked with close calls, but ended with displays of Mexican pride such as flags.
“They have a lot of heart and that’s what it takes to win games. Soccer is about playing with heart and that’s what Mexico has,” Anthony Ruiz of Indio said. {“url”:”https://twitter.com/JeremyChenKESQ/status/1008410924116348928″,”author_name”:”Jeremy Chen”,”author_url”:”https://twitter.com/JeremyChenKESQ”,”html”:”&#lt;blockquote class=”twitter-tweet”&#gt;&#lt;p lang=”en” dir=”ltr”&#gt;Pure jubilation from Mexico fans in &#lt;a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/LaQuinta?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”&#gt;#LaQuinta&#lt;/a&#gt;. &#lt;a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/ElTri?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”&#gt;#ElTri&#lt;/a&#gt; defeat Germany in their &#lt;a href=”https://twitter.com/hashtag/WorldCup?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw”&#gt;#WorldCup&#lt;/a&#gt; opener in a stunning upset. “Look at Argentina aganst Iceland, 1-1. Those teams, they have both have nothing to lose. They just go in there and fight and they won so I have to give them respect for that,” Jan Henke of La Quinta, said.
The thrilling game brought a packed house and a lot of business. Staff said it’s normally a slow time of the year for the summer.
“If it wasn’t for this game we would only have a few tables in here, but we anticipated a good crowd and at 7:00, we opened up the doors and we had a full bar by 8:00, so yeah, very good,” Francisco Martinez, general manager of Burgers and Beer, said.
The staff estimates about a 70 percent uptick in business for today and expects possibly more the next game El Tri plays.
“They’re going to see the videos and see all the stuff people posted and I’m sure they’re going to be here next Saturday,” Martinez said.
“I think the World Cup, we’re going to end up doing very good and we’re going to celebrate, until it’s over,” Ruiz said.
