June Coachella Valley Spotlight recipient: Dezart Performs

June’s Coachella Valley Spotlight recipient is Dezart Performs. The mission of the Palm Springs’ nonprofit organization is to provide an artistic home for bold and cutting-edge plays, creating an atmosphere of artistic growth for actors, writers, and directors who uniquely contribute to the diverse theatrical environment of the Coachella Valley.

“We recognize the performing arts enrich the life and culture of a community, through our productions, Dezart Performs aims to promote greater understanding and provoke insightful discussion,” according to the organization’s Coachella Valley Spotlight grant application.

The $25,000 grant, which will be awarded to technical upgrades for their productions in the Pearl McManus Theater at the Palm Springs Women’s Club, where the theatre company performs November through April.

“For 10 years, we have used an old, bulky sound and light boards with limited capacity are starting to fail,” said Michael Shaw, Dezart Performs artistic director, in the application. “Several microphones and speakers have also stopped working, and we’ve been renting or borrowing additional equipment just to finish out our season.”

The organization also plans to replace an outdated personal computer and iPad that are currently used during productions, as well as transceivers and headsets for its production crew. Plus, the Dezart Performs board and staff are excited to purchase a new ticketing system.

“After recently celebrating our tenth anniversary, these upgrades will lift us into the next decade of providing quality theatre in the Coachella Valley,” said Clark Dugger, Dezart Performs board president. “We are extremely grateful to be selected by the Berger Foundation and CBS Local 2 as the June recipient of the Coachella Valley Spotlight.”
