Excessive heat comes to the Coachella Valley in crushing wave

Triple-digit temperatures were expected in the Coachella Valley Friday as the region’s heat wave persists through the night, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures as high as 115 degrees were possible today, leading the NWS to continue its excessive heat warning for the Coachella Valley.

The warning, which is in effect until 8 p.m. today, covers the Coachella Valley, including the cities of Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, Palm Desert Country, La Quinta, and Coachella. A similar warning forecasting highs of 105 to 111 degrees was also issued for the San Gorgonio Pass near Banning.

Thursday’s Coachella Valley highs included 109 degrees in Palm Springs, 108 degrees in Thermal and 105 degrees in Indio, according to the NWS.

Residents were encouraged to drink plenty of fluids and stay indoors with air conditioning during the warning window, which forecasters said: “will create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are possible.”

The NWS also urged residents to check on relatives and neighbors, and keep young children and pets from being left in unattended vehicles, with car interiors able to “reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.”

County health officials advised locals to take advantage of the 56 cooling centers that opened to the public this month and are available at no cost. A list of cooling centers can be found at www.capriverside.org.
