Cal Fire extinguishes brush fire in Desert Hot Springs

Cal Fire/Riverside County firefighters extinguished a small brush fire in Desert Hot Springs near the intersection of Hacienda Avenue and Mesquite Avenue.

The fire was reported at approximately 10:30 a.m.

“When we got on scene, there was a small spot of vegetation, it pretty much burnt out on its own. Just smoldering,” said Preston Herd, a Riverside County Fire Department engineer. “So we came out here and put it out.”

Fires like these, although not particularly pervasive, are preventable.

“The biggest problem is that we have about 30 homeless encampments in this area,” Herd continued. “And, a lot of times… [in the encampment] will be cooking, at the fire will be started that way.”

No structures were threatened by the fire. No injuries were reported at the scene.
