Residents optimistic DHSPD’s motorcycle officer will put a stop to speeding
The Desert Hot Springs Police Department is hopeful their new motorcycle officer will make drivers think twice about speeding. The new officer will monitor traffic on a notoriously dangerous stretch of road.
The officer is out on the road from 5:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. and also during the evening commute hours focusing mainly on Palm Drive. It’s one of the roads that has seen an uptick in collisions, in March a DHSHS senior was killed crossing the intersection of Palm Drive and Camino Aventura.
Residents are pleased to see police do something about the speeding.
“I’ve had a couple people stop up next to me after a traffic stop and say ‘Hey I’m glad you’re out there,'” said Corporal Scott Hazen, the DHSPD motorcycle officer.
The bike, a civilian BMW customized with police features, was approved by city leaders and costs about $42,000.
Desert Hot Springs resident Brian Blueskye saw someone pulled over by the motorcycle officer yesterday.
“He was probably going 50-60 mph, and he was going in and out of the right and left lanes,” Blueskye said. “I’m sitting there wondering, where’s the new motorcycle cop? Low and behold he pulls right out.”
Corporal Hazen said if you stick to the speed limit, he’ll stay out of your way.

One resident says he hopes word goes around.
“I think once word goes around that he is out there and people see him out there and they see the people pulled over, hopefully, that sends the message that they need to slow down,” said Brian Blueskye of Desert Hot Springs.
Hazen says in the last two days, he has issued already issued 30 tickets.
