Agua Caliente Casino unveils technology to turn food waste into water

The Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa in Rancho Mirage is using new technology to help the environment.

As we first reported last week, the resort is using the “ORCA Digester,” a system that turns food waste into environmentally-safe water that can flow straight into the public sewage system.

Agua Caliente is the first resort to adopt this technology in the Coachella Valley.

Jim Stone, facilities director for the resort, says they were looking for an effective way to handle their food waste. Their search led them to ORCA Digesters, a Toronto-based company, and pioneer in green food waste solutions.

The technology can convert up to 2,400 pounds, or more than one ton, of food waste per day. Per year, the process will eliminate about 624 tons of waste from our local landfills.

The ORCA Digester takes 24 hours and a process called “aerobic digestion” to fully convert the waste to water within the stainless steel containers.

While this is Agua Caliente’s latest effort in reducing their environmental impact, the resort also recycled nearly half a million pounds of material last year and uses led lighting on the majority of their property.

“The lands out here are sacred. They are so important and very, very delicate” Stone told KESQ & CBS Local 2.

In addition to lowering the amount of waste in landfills, using this technology also lowers garbage truck fuel usage, co2 emissions. The water can be used to create renewable energy.
